Independent designers usually ask which platform is better. The useful question is which one fails more gracefully when the client takes over.

Quick Verdict

Framer for design-led sites where the visual result is the point. Squarespace for clients who will edit their own content for years and want the phone support to prove it.

How I Use Them

Framer is my choice when the layout is the deliverable: portfolios, launches, anything where motion and typography carry the message. I design in Figma, rebuild in Framer, and hand over a short Loom walkthrough.

Squarespace is my choice when the client has staff, a blog and no designer on call. It is not exciting, and that is the point: the site still works in year three without me.

The handover test
Before choosing, ask who will edit this site in eighteen months. If the answer is “the client’s marketing assistant”, pick the boring platform.

What Works Well

Framer: component-level control, genuinely good interactions, fast iteration for people who already think in design tools.

Squarespace: predictable billing, mature content editing, support that a non-technical client can actually use.

What Does Not

Framer: the CMS is thin for content-heavy sites, and clients find the editor less obvious than they expect.

Squarespace: design ceiling is real. Deep customisation eventually means fighting the template.

Pricing / Value

Both are subscriptions. Framer costs more per site once you add features; Squarespace costs more over five years if the client renews unused add-ons. Model three years before deciding.

Final Verdict

Neither is a technical decision. It is a decision about the client, and the platform that matches the client is always the better one.
